Start-up nuisances

I asked several of my closest advisers what a start-up entrepreneur should do? They suggested that I spend 1/3 of my time hiring, another third of my time communicating with employees, and do all the administrative in the final third.

I had — have — a few questions on that allocation. What about talking to partners? The Board of Directors? Customers? Press? Or, in businesses like mine, regulators?

So, what does a CEO do?  I believe, fundamentally, that all of these tasks drive to one, and only one, real goal: Setting a culture, and then defending it against all comers.  You have to make sure new hires get inculcated with your culture.  You have to remind current employees of key cultural norms.  People with influence on your business — Board members, press folks, and partners — need to understand what you are all about.

Hiring and Firing

Though the term is quite a nightmare for HR ,it is a truth that every HR faces in his/her work tenure.Hiring the more tedious it sounds the more complicated it is if we map it to the later effects on the company.

If you choose the right guy the consequences being:-
  •     Dealing with too much expectations of the new joined from the company and vice verse
  •     Retention if the talent is good
  •     Attrition rate because of the new joined
If you chose the wrong one the consequences are far worse:-
  •  Dealing with frustrations of the management and the employee
  • Competency matrix and process of training and counseling the employee
  • Firing and rehiring if the competency gap is not bridged within a stipulated time
  • The monetary loss in the whole process

Cross cultural diversity at workplace

I had been listening to a video post on HRM Asia   on strengthening the diversity at workplace.

One of the aspects he touched while delivering the lecture which i liked, is bringing in cross cultural diversity in your workplace which serves a lot of our purposes as HR.  The pain points in any organisational system being  distrust,  favoritism and unclear purpose are things many public and private organisations have had to cope with.

By bringing in cross culture we mend some of these loop holes as in the system, establishing a bridge where our employees  give in to trusting their peers and  management, which makes them risk taking and more accountable for their jobs .

So I guess we do a li'l offbeat recruitment while keeping the big picture in mind while on boarding people at our companies.

Boredom at work

We have all often felt this, sometime or the other, whoever we might be, some might argue that there is always so much work to do, but isn't piled up with all wok all day yet another form of boredom? I would say very likely!!!

So what to do?

There are few things that people do
Taking tea/coffee breaks
Smoking breaks
Gossip breaks
Taking a quick nap
Call break
And so on..........

But surely believed , some of the best ideas of life and work come from these breaks, when the mind does what it wants to, so who said " boredom was ever bad "!!

The Appraisal season

Come March-April and everybody is worried about appraisals, this being the scenario in most Indian companies. Some more cautious employers hold back the appraisals till later part of the year to maximize the utility of the employees soon to fled from their company.

I found out that no matter who pays and who leaves, both the employee and employer are at risk during this season. You lose your job or you lose your resource, both important for sustainability. This of course being the aftereffect of the appraisals season.

And then there is the bargain game...who to retain and at what worth....... there is something here to ponder upon...during all this game of cat and mouse, the people who facilitate the smooth going of the process, the HR team ,who become so indispensable during this process.............what would  compensate if the brain drain happens in this department!!
